Neil Aspin replaced Kenny Burns at Left Half after fifty-seven minutes, and Aidan Butterworth got the second Leeds equalizer in the eighty-second minute after he came on at Inside Right for Derek Parlane, in the sixty-ninth minute. Halifax brought on Mick Wood at right back in place of Paul Kendall at the beginning of extra-time. Jim Hallybone gave Halifax the lead in the eighteenth minute and future Leeds player, Bobby Davison restored their lead in the sixty-third minute. David Hutchinson of Harrogate was the referee.

Leeds United found out how hard life can be in the lower divisions when they were stretched all the way by Halifax Town last night. Leeds eventually claimed the West Riding County Senior Cup in a near deserted Elland Road-but it took an extra-time goal to beat the Fourth Division sidebefore an attendance of 1,228. But with their first game in the Second Division just five days away, the price of Cup-winning could be high. Leeds lost Burns, injured in a collision with Lukic, early in the second half, and his bruised ham-string could make him a doubtful starter at Grimsby on Saturday. The goal that won the nightcame in the ninety-second minute-a powerful twenty-five yard drive from Frank Gray. It was hard on Halifax who had held the lead twicebefore an eighty-second minute diving header from Butterworth had pushed the game into extra-time. Halifax dominated the opening exchanges to go ahead after eighteen minutes through Hallybone, their close season free transfer signing from Orient. His twenty-five yard curling shot caught Leeds by surprise and it took a penalty to level matters in the fifty-second minute. Worthington guided the ball home from the penalty spot after Smelt and Parlane had collided. Halifax hit back again to lead again with a fine headerin the sixty-third minute from Davison-their leading goalscorer last season and a player who has already hit seven goals in pre-season games this time. But Butterworth in the eighty-second minute, and then Gray eventually saved the Leeds blushes. The irony of it all was though Leeds fielded a side which had cost almost £2m., against the £60,000 spent on the Halifax team.

The Leeds Youth team was in competition with seven other teams, which included the host club, in an International Youth Competition in Ausburg, West Germany. It was their third attempt at winning the competitions held in West Germany and it was third time lucky. They had been runners-up in their previous attempts but this time they finished top of their group, by defeating Tel Aviv and Hertha Berlin each by 1-0 and drawing with Sparta Prague 1-1. They played East German side Energie Cottbus in the final and triumphed by 2-0, with Michael Sloanes and Tony Smart getting the goals.
